Theme is not…..

1. Sci-fi, fantasy, horror
                                    These are…GENRES
2. happy, scary, gloomy
                                    These are…MOODS
3. “be nice”
                                    These are…SHORT MESSAGES
4. Love, friendship
                                    These are…TOPICS

WHAT THE HECK IS IT????

THE GIST (POINT) of the story you are supposed to walk away with.

ALMOST ALWAYS HAS TO HAVE A "BECAUSE…."

FOR EXAMPLE: Don’t run in front of cars BECAUSE the driver might get mad at you and chase you down.

Don’t play with fire BECAUSE you could burn your house to the ground

Example Theme: Be nice to children BECAUSE they could prank you if you aren’t.

LOVE LETTERS
FICTION
PROPAGANDA (advertisements)

Where we see NO themes:
History Textbooks (you are supposed to give FACTS)
SIMPLE children’s stories (like ABC books)
NON-Fiction
Recipes/maps
Directions/Instructions
