Figurative Language Devices

PLEASE put these in YOUR words, that you will remember and understand.

Define these words and put an example next to them. There are a few given for you...
Alliteration: A repetition of the starting sound in a sentence or line. Sally sat by Sandy
Assonance: repetition
Allusion: something suggesting something else, usually suggesting a deeper meaning. Ex: If I speak really slowly with a pause between words, I am alluding the fact that I need you to really hear what I am saying.
Antagonist: the main character's opponent 
Characterization: how we learn about a character 3 ways: by narrator, by characters words & action
Simile: comparison to something else using "Like" or "As" "She is as small as a mouse"
Metaphor: a comparison to something else to help explain more. Words do not mean as they say.
Foreshadowing: author alludes to something that has not happened.
Hyperbole: an over exaggeration. "I told you a million times to clean your room" 
Idiom: metaphor that is commonly used and has a specific place/event it came from "Don't chicken out"
Imagery: Painting a picture in the mind of the reader, using the sense (sight, touch, smell, sound, taste)
Mood: Uses words to paint the mood/setting/type of story (dark and gloomy, humorous, etc)
Situational Irony: Example: Winning a million dollars and dying the next day
Verbal Irony: Say one thing and mean another 
Narrator: person telling story (1st person POV: character tells the story. 2nd person POV: character or persona is speaking to the audience. 3rd person POV is told by narrator)
Onomatopoeia: formation of a word by imitation of a sound (BOOM, crack, whack)
Paradox: situation that contradicts itself and defies logic 
Personification: 
Oxymoron: words that  that is my "NEW, CLASSIC example"
Plot: Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Denouement"
Point of View: Who is narrating the story (1st person POV: character tells the story. 2nd person POV: character or persona is speaking to the audience. 3rd person POV is told by narrator)
Protagonist: The main character 
Realistic Fiction: genre that is based off of things that could happen in real life
Sarcasm: saying something with a tone and meaning something opposite "Oh Yes, I would love to take out the trash"
Satire: a piece of work that makes fun at/mocks another piece of work. Ridicule used for humor 
Flashback: stops the story to go back in time.
Style: the way an author chooses to write. Some writers use a lot of repetition to get a point across.
Symbolism: when objects represent something more than just that object
Pun: play on words 
Consonance: repetition of consonant sounds. "The bigger bag of boogers"
End Rhyme: two or more lines rhyme at the end of each line "I like the shoe/ Was it new?"
Internal Rhyme: more than one rhyme within a single line "she heard the word spoken"
Theme: moral or message the author wants you to walk away with "Love conquers all"
Dialect: the words and way of speaking unique to a place
Motif: a recurring image or theme
Allegory: using a story to help someone understand more
Apostrophe: Speaking to someone who is absent. Ex: In a song someone might say, "why did you do this me"
Dialogue: Conversation between two or more characters 
Connotation: the intended definition of a word "Sick means cool"
Denotation: the dictionary definition of a word "Sick means ill"
